REPORT TO PICKMERE PARISH COUNCIL

1st March 2022

AGENDA ITEM 9.12 SECOND CONSULTATION – 2023 CONSTITUENCY BOUNDARY REVIEW

1. REPORT
1.1 A review of parliamentary constituencies is taking place to ensure each one has roughly the same number of electors. As part of this process, the number of constituencies in England will increase to 543. The Boundary Commission is required by law to make sure that each constituency in England has between 69,724 and 77,062 electors, excluding two ‘protected’ constituencies for the Isle of Wight.

1.2 Due to population changes, the number of people registered to vote in some constituencies is much higher than in others. The 2023 Boundary Review will therefore rebalance the number of electors represented by each MP. This requires considerable change to the existing map of constituencies. The Commission’s task is to redraw the map of constituencies in England so that it represents local communities as well as possible, while keeping to the legal requirements outlined above.

1.3 The Commission received over 34,000 responses to its first consultation, which took place from June to August last year. From 22 February to 4 April 2022, the Commission is holding a six-week secondary consultation on its initial proposals, and it wants as many people as possible to have the opportunity to provide their views. Comments from members of the public and other bodies may be submitted between 22 February and 4 April 2022 in writing via the consultation website, bcereviews.org.uk, or by email or letter. Feedback can be provided on anything from where the proposed electoral boundaries are, to suggestions for new constituency names.

2. IMPLICATIONS FOR PICKMERE

2.1 The boundary of Tatton constituency is proposed to change significantly, including:
• Areas including Antrobus, Great Budworth and areas to the west, together with Wincham, Lostock Graham, Lach Dennis and the area to the south etc are proposed to be excluded from the new constituency.
• Land around Goostrey is to be included in the new constituency.
• Lymm is to be included.
